“Do You Remember The Time?”

Most of our campuses have recently completed a homecoming celebration.  These annual events are where alumni return to campus to reminisce about the good times, the not so good times, the times that never really happened but we like to think they did, the time to talk about who hasn’t changed as well as about those who really have changed, and so much more.  Yes, these annual reunions are special times.

This year I participated in my campus homecoming and the homecomings at two of my alma maters.  All were special and great opportunities to connect and reconnect with former classmates, colleagues, students, and friends.   Former students are always highlights as their post-graduation successes never cease to impress. However, the biggest treat came from seeing a former staff member who “rescued” me during my first semester in college.  Dr. Clantha McCurdy saw two new clueless freshmen and helped us navigate the registration process.  She became an ongoing resource and adviser.  When I began my professional career in higher education, it was modeled after Clantha’s example:  take care of the students; do good work; and always be willing to help.   Thanks, Dr. McCurdy for your example.

We should always take the time to reconnect and to recognize.  After all it’s the people in our previous paths who have made our journeys worthwhile.  Make sure you make time to let them know.  See you next year at homecoming.

Continue to do good work.
