New Beginnings:  “They’re Baaaaack!”

Welcome back to another exciting new academic year.  In case you haven’t noticed the hustle and bustle of parents and students buying school supplies at your local retailers, in case you have missed the incessant advertisements for back-to-school sales on everything from clothing to pencils to even automobiles (yes, cars, too), then surely you have seen the scores of additional people wandering about your campus. “They’re Baaaaack!”  Many of you will remember this hauntingly oft repeated refrain form the 80’s classic “Poltergeist II”.

Just as back then we were reminded that the aliens had returned, some of us feel that way as we begin each new school year.  I want to remind each and every one of us that these new students are not aliens.  In fact, many of them probably see us as the aliens.  We are the ones that they have never seen before and we work in foreign sounding departments like residence life, strategic planning, multicultural affairs, and the most alien sounding of all, the bursar’s office.   These fresh faces are experiencing campus life for the first time.  This is their unique experience as college students.  Make sure that you contribute to their success by not looking at them as if they are just a rerun of previous classes.  Remember, this is a wonderful time of new beginnings for them, and for us as well.  We must guard against becoming complacent or jaded or even indifferent to these first-time enrollees.  Show ‘em some love.

Sure the “Class of 2023” may sound like a sci-fi thriller from back in the day.  But, these new folks are why we do what we do: we educate; we lead; we support; we direct; and ultimately, we help dreams come true.  Continue to do good work and have a great new school year.
